Founded by the Liberty Hill United Methodist Church in 2006, the Give a Kid a Chance program provides essential back-to-school items to children of single-parent families. Hosted in Cherokee County, the program served 100 children in its inaugural year with the collaboration of three churches. By 2009, the initiative drew in 2,300 students and the support of 89 religious, community, and business organizations. In addition, the 2009 event included the donation of 300 backpacks to MUST Inc. That same year, Give a Kid a Chance became an incorporated 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, and joined in partnership with the Cherokee School District. Today, the non-profit serves more than 3,200 students.
Individuals who would like to become involved with the organization can do so by volunteering for the annual event or becoming a Give a Kid a Chance liaison. Monetary and supply donations are also welcomed. The organization particularly focuses on backpacks and school supplies. However, donations of new socks and gently used, school-appropriate clothing are accepted as well.
