In the first century AD, nearly 2,000 years ago, the Ephesians were a group of merchants and tradespeople originally from Greece who had established themselves in Ephesus. Ephesus was an ancient city at the mouth of the Cayster River in modern-day Turkey, close to Izmir, where the river opens into the Mediterranean Sea. Passing through Ephesus as a missionary after the execution of Jesus Christ, Paul established a community of Christians there, whom he continued to correspond with after he returned to Rome. Theologians and historians contend that Paul or one of his scribes wrote letters of support (the epistles) to nearly 14 separate Christian communities that he had established in the Mediterranean region prior to his own execution in 67 AD (circa.). These letters encouraged them to stay faithful to Christ in the face of hardship and persecution and not to take revenge against their oppressors.
Founded in 2005 in a vacant Kmart building, His Hands Church in Woodstock, Georgia, has quickly grown into a popular nondenominational Christian mega church in the state. One of the slogans for His Hands Church comes from the words of the apostle Paul in his letters to the Ephesians during the foundational years of Christianity: “Walk with Him and learn a life of love.”

Located in Woodstock, Georgia, His Hands Church is committed to serving the congregation through religious services and community work. In 2008 and 2009, His Hands Church joined the Give a Kid a Chance program to host its annual back-to-school event.
Founded by the Liberty Hill United Methodist Church in 2006, the Give a Kid a Chance program provides essential back-to-school items to children of single-parent families. Hosted in Cherokee County, the program served 100 children in its inaugural year with the collaboration of three churches. By 2009, the initiative drew in 2,300 students and the support of 89 religious, community, and business organizations. In addition, the 2009 event included the donation of 300 backpacks to MUST Inc. That same year, Give a Kid a Chance became an incorporated 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, and joined in partnership with the Cherokee School District. Today, the non-profit serves more than 3,200 students. Individuals who would like to become involved with the organization can do so by volunteering for the annual event or becoming a Give a Kid a Chance liaison. Monetary and supply donations are also welcomed. The organization particularly focuses on backpacks and school supplies. However, donations of new socks and gently used, school-appropriate clothing are accepted as well. |
