In the first century AD, nearly 2,000 years ago, the Ephesians were a group of merchants and tradespeople originally from Greece who had established themselves in Ephesus. Ephesus was an ancient city at the mouth of the Cayster River in modern-day Turkey, close to Izmir, where the river opens into the Mediterranean Sea. Passing through Ephesus as a missionary after the execution of Jesus Christ, Paul established a community of Christians there, whom he continued to correspond with after he returned to Rome. Theologians and historians contend that Paul or one of his scribes wrote letters of support (the epistles) to nearly 14 separate Christian communities that he had established in the Mediterranean region prior to his own execution in 67 AD (circa.). These letters encouraged them to stay faithful to Christ in the face of hardship and persecution and not to take revenge against their oppressors.
Founded in 2005 in a vacant Kmart building, His Hands Church in Woodstock, Georgia, has quickly grown into a popular nondenominational Christian mega church in the state. One of the slogans for His Hands Church comes from the words of the apostle Paul in his letters to the Ephesians during the foundational years of Christianity: “Walk with Him and learn a life of love.”
